Sexual Orientation Microaggressions and Trauma

In this chapter, I review the spectrum of microaggressions that target people on the basis of their sexual orientation. Sexual orientation is a person’s sense of personal and social identity, which is typically based on three components: (a) who a person is sexually attracted to, (b) the behaviors through which a person expresses or acts upon those sexual attractions, and (c) the sense of belonging to groups or communities who share those identities (Nadal, 2013). The chapter begins with an analysis of the current state of heterosexism in the United States, as well as the extant literature on microaggressions that target lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer (LGBQ) people. I discuss microaggressions based on gender identity in Chapter 6, as sexual orientation and gender identity are separate constructs that warrant their own examination. Accordingly, LGBTQ refers to the general umbrella population, and LGBQ specifically connotes the group or groups of individuals who identify as nonheterosexual.
